WHAT ARE THOSE SECOND COLLECTIONS ? !

Nationally, across the 195 dioceses & eparchies that comprise the U.S., our Bishops permit the collection of funds for the benefit of Church efforts.

These “second collections” from parishes are sent to a diocesan central office (namely, a chancery) for accounting.  Then they are sent to the Bishops’ central office in Washington, D.C., for accounting & allocation.

The current schedule within our Omaha Archdiocese:

JAN.       Seminary
               for the education of the seminarians of the Omaha Archdiocese only

FEB.       Four in One          divided into four needs:
               Catholic University, U.S. missions, Latin American missions & the Holy Land

F/M       Black & Indian Missions
               for U.S. Afro & Native American ministries;  oldest second collection – since 1884 !

Mar.     Catholic Relief Services
               for crisis aid in the U.S. & around the world;  founded 1943

MAY      Catholic Communications Campaign
               for evangelization via television, radio, newspapers & other media;  since 1979

JUNE      Peter’s Pence
               for the Holy Father to assist emergencies around the world;  formalized in 1871

OCT.      World Mission Sunday
               for the Holy Father to assist missions around the world;  since 1927

NOV.     Catholic Campaign for Human Development
               for poverty reduction programs in America;  founded 1969

DEC.      Retirement Fund for Religious
               for the care of elderly nuns (88%), brothers & priests;  since 1988

Sudden disasters may warrant a special second collection, e.g., hurricane, earthquake.
Missionaries who visit here (usually summertime) request a second collection.
Other occasional needs, e.g., the Archdiocese for the Military Services.
